DID YOU KNOW

The Ryckman House

THANKS MELBOURNE BEACH COMPANY

Did you know in the quaint little town of Melbourne Beach where Riverside Dr and Ocean Ave meet, history and a bit of mystery collide? Located here is a cozy little riverside park…and in the heart of the park stands the Ryckman House. Over a century old, the historical house has an eerie reputation.

This 2-story house sits across the street from Djon’s Steakhouse and next to the Melbourne Beach Town Hall. It was one of the first homes to be built in Melbourne Beach. It was constructed by the Melbourne Beach Company in 1890 for the original owner, Jacob Fox. The house later found itself in the hands of the Ryckman family who purchased it from Fox. The Ryckmans watched as the town of Melbourne Beach grew around their home, thus turning it into a centerpiece of some sorts.

The family resided in the house from 1908 to 1979, when Ruth Ryckman, passed away at the age of 89. She left the historic house to the Town of Melbourne Beach, but that seems to be where the haunting tales begin. Did Ruth truly bid farewell to her beloved home. Legend has it, her spirit still lingers within the walls and those who visit can feel her presence.

Witnesses have reported seeing a ‘lady’ gazing at them from the second story window. Others have shared tales of lights flickering on and off without any explanation. A more bone-chilling report has been seeing a mannequin spring to life when no one is watching, other than peering in through a window.

Despite the ghostly tales, the Ryckman House opens its doors to the public on the weekdays from 8 am to 5 pm. Visitors can explore the historic rooms and appreciate the architectural gem.

I encourage you to check out the Ryckman House while the sun is still high. While there, take a stroll around the park and out to the river dock. As night falls, you can enjoy dinner at one of the local restaurants within walking distance, and you can even check out the moonlit ocean while enjoying an ice cream from the ice cream shop.

Who knows, come nightfall, amidst the rustling of palm trees and the sounds of the crashing waves, you might see the friendly spirit of Ruth Ryckman taking a moonlit stroll around her home.
